The magic words on the streets of the information superhighway these days is search engine optimization (SEO). And, this not only applies to the content on your site; it applies to all of your online marketing efforts – even your social media marketing accounts.
Following are a few “hot tips” on how to optimize your Twitter profile to get more traffic and leads – and possibly even land on the first page of Google.
Search Marketing: Why Optimizing Your Social Media Marketing Profiles Is Important
Did you know that getting on the first page of Google was even possible via a social media site profile? It is and it’s because Google and other search engines crawl social media sites like Twitter – a lot. Proof? Type “site:Twitter.com” (without quotes) into Google. What this tells you is how many indexed pages a search engine has of a given site.
As of this writing, 121,000,000 results were returned for Twitter via Google. The average site may be lucky to have a couple of hundred pages.
Now that you know why it’s important to optimize your Twitter profile, let’s get to some specifics.
4 Steps to Getting Your Twitter Profile on the First Page of Google
Your Twitter profile consists of four pieces of information; your Name, Location, Web (URL) and Bio.
Name: Use keywords here. When you sign up for an account, you will be asked for your name and a username. What shows up on your Twitter profile is your “Name.” So, even though your name may be “Jane,” use keywords in both places.
When/if prospects are interested, let them click through to your website to find out more about you (ie, your real name, etc.).
Note: Putting keywords in the “Name” box is frowned on by some social media marketing and SEO experts. But really, people are going to follow you based on your tweets. So from an SEO standpoint, it makes more sense to use keywords instead of a name.
Location: Remember, local search is very important, so don’t leave this blank. If most of your business comes from local customers, this is particularly important. If you have clients worldwide, then putting in a country may make more sense.
Web (Your URL): If you don’t already have a website or blog, incorporate keywords into it.
Bio: You get 160 characters in your bio. Make it as naturally keyword rich – and informative — as possible.
It’s amazing how many don’t even bother to fill all these four fields out. Some do an incomplete job. This is wasting valuable online real estate. Make the most of each piece of information asked for by Twitter (and other social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, etc.). You just may find yourself on the front page of Google – and all it cost was a few minutes of your time. Now that’s effective social media marketing!
